Directive Play Therapy
Some children benefit further from a more structured directive play therapy modality. Using a directive play therapy approach the therapist will take more of an active role in guiding the play therapy session. The therapist may provide specific toys, materials, or activities to address the child's specific issues or goals.

The therapist will use techniques to help the child:

  • Explore different issues

  • Learn new skills

  • Achieve therapeutic goals

The therapist may offer:

  • Interpretations

  • Teach coping strategies

  • Provide guidance during the play

This type of play therapy is not about normalising play or promoting masking, it is a nuanced therapeutic process that engages the child within the realm of their interests and their developmental strengths to foster their resilience, autonomy, happiness and joy within their social and physical environments.
